"I can read e-mail, surf the web, and watch Netflix. Isn't that good enough?"

Newport County is getting left behind while other communities receive fiber broadband.  Consider unforeseen purposes, such as during the early days of electrification and the Internet.  Folks didn't think they would have much use for either initially.  A high tech economy has minimal ecological impact and facilitates location agnostic real-time collaboration while allowing for living in a desirable area.

“Most technologies get deployed for a single purpose, and people tend to fight against expanding from there,” says Chahil. “When it happens, new worlds suddenly open up.” -WIRED

There has been a "sea change" in content delivery from traditional subscription (cable and/or satellite television).  Per a  Nielsen Report, "the average U.S. consumer spends approximately three hours and 48 minutes a day on digital media, with 62% of that usage occurring via smartphone apps and web use."

The 21st century home and workspace requires robust upload capability across multiple devices to support the following capabilities:

  • 3-D and Virtual Reality (VR) modeling.
  • Artificial Intelligence.
    • Homebrewed/decentralized neural network development.
      • Requires access to powerful computers.
    • Intelligent traffic management.
  • Augmented Reality (AR)/Virtual Reality (VR).
    • Standalone holograms.
    • Overlays in various work areas.
    • Virtual workspaces.
    • Virtual meeting spaces.
  • Cloud based collaboration.
  • Cloud computing.
    • A return to powerful mainframe/thin clients paradigm of computing.
    • Requires nearly instantaneous uplinks with nearly 100% uptime to leverage.
    • Cloud-based storage facilitates:
      • Analytics of cloud based data via machine learning/artificial intelligence.
      • Minimize hardware footprint and capital outlay.
        • Efficiency of computing cycles.
        • Reduce power/cooling consumption.
          • Situate servers in geographic area with renewable energy and cool air (Iceland, etc.).
        • Virtualize legacy environments.
      • Off-site data storage.
        • Primary and/or redundancy.
        • Disaster recovery.
      • Virtual desktops.
        • Enables agility of IT environment.
    • Cloud service and infrastructure market segments raked in $300B last year.
      • Amazon Web Services, Google, IBM, Microsoft (Azure) and Oracle are among the leading cloud computing companies.
        • The Pentagon is currently soliciting for a $10B 10 year sole-source contract to build a DoD wide cloud across multiple enclaves, referred to as Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastrutre (JEDI).
  • Distance Learning.
  • e-Sports/Cloud Gaming.
    • Stadia (Google), xCloud (Microsoft), Orion (Bethesda).

  • If This Then That.
    • Internet of Things.
  • Livestreaming.
    • Support e-commerce/live sales.
    • User-generated content provider industry.
      • Facebook Live, Houseparty, Periscope (Twitter), Snapchat, TikTok, Twitch (Amazon), YouTube, etc.
        • "TikTok boasts 26.5 million users in the U.S., 60 percent of whom are aged 16 to 24 – a large and very impressionable user base that spends an average of 52 minutes per day on the app, per Mediakix".

  • Mirror World.
    • All devices automatically taggable and sortable based on visual, etc. characteristics.
    • Machine learning applied to interpreting the world.
    • Recall from any point in recorded history time previous streetscape, scene, etc. (DVR of the real-world).
    • Virtual replication of a live production system (spacecraft, etc.) for A/B testing, modeling, and troubleshooting.

The first big technology platform was the web, which digitized information, subjecting knowledge to the power of algorithms; it came to be dominated by Google.

The second great platform was social media, running primarily on mobile phones. It digitized people and subjected human behavior and relationships to the power of algorithms, and it is ruled by Facebook and WeChat.

We are now at the dawn of the third platform, which will digitize the rest of the world. On this platform, all things and places will be machine-readable, subject to the power of algorithms. Whoever dominates this grand third platform will become among the wealthiest and most powerful people and companies in history, just as those who now dominate the first two platforms have. Also, like its predecessors, this new platform will unleash the prosperity of thousands more companies in its ecosystem, and a million new ideas—and problems—that weren’t possible before machines could read the world.  -WIRED

  • Quantum Internet (experimentation)
    • "...the modern internet traffics via electricity in bits streaming between classical computers (e.g. smartphones, tablets, thermostats), the next generation of internet will carry information via light, or photons, using the quantum bit, or qubit." (CNBC, Apr 2020)
  • Security cameras (with live stream capability).
    • To be detailed enough to be useful, requires a 4K resolution.
      • Uploads up to 400 GB/month (per camera).
  • Supercomputing/"Quantum computing" sharing and processing.
    • Requires injection/upload of enormous data sets.
    • Cycle (processor) time on these machines is big money for cycles.
      • Data latency unacceptable.
    • Push envelop to maintain economic and military edge over adversaries.
      • Cryptography, image analysis (deep space, undersea, etc.), simulations.
  • Telemedicine.
    • Allow seniors to remain in their homes longer.
      • Robotic (human avatar) personal assistants (AI back end).
    • Medical imaging reviewed globally.
    • Remote surgery.
  • Telework.
    • Eliminates commutes (reduces carbon footprint).
  • Video chat.
    • Alexa (Amazon), Discord, Duo (Google), FaceTime (Apple), Facebook Messenger, Google Hangouts/Meets, Instagram (Facebook), Hangouts (Google), Houseparty (formerly Meerkat), Portal (Facebook), Skype (Microsoft), Slack, WhatsApp (Facebook).
